How To Use a Reflector -

We've all heard of reflectors, but do you know how much of difference they can make to your photos?

We'll show you how to use a reflector. Being something that is used a lot in photography, it is really a useful tool for all kinds of imaging.

In 'How To Use a Reflector Part 1' we'll take you through the basics of how reflectors can manipulate light to balance out deep shadows and burnt out highlights - and brightness to get subtle or even strong effects on your images.

There's a reflector for everyone whether it be purpose built reflectors or something as simple as white envelopes or large pieces of white card. By using coloured reflectors you can even add colour to areas of an image - especially to the shadows.

Once you understand how to use a reflector, it'll improve pretty much all areas of your photography, whether it be still life, portraits or commercial photography, which is fantastic considering how simple it is.

Reflectors can be not only used to push light back in - they can be used to remove light which sounds crazy. Check out the video and you'll see what we're on about.

Window Light Part 1

One of the very best photographic light sources is completely free and can be found in almost any home - window light. And the best soft directional light comes from a window facing away from the sun.

This might sound nuts but when you have sunshine streaming into the room it'll create harsh black shadows and the 'soft' element will be lost. If it's an overcast day then facing away from the sun isn't so much of an issue - but watch out for breaks in the clouds.

You can use window light for pretty much any indoor photos from portraiture to still life and all sorts of places between. Window lighting works great with a reflector by the way and you can experiment with that for yourself. If you don't have one try using a piece of white card to bounce a bit of light back into the image. In this video we'll show you what to look for and how to use one of the best lighting kits available - windows!

Camera Shake - and how to avoid it!

Camera Shake is the cause of more soft fuzzy pictures than anything else. I can't tell you how many people have asked me why their pictures aren't sharp and their camera won't focus properly. But there's nothing wrong with the camera - it's camera shake. So what is it?

Ever noticed that when you look through a powerful lens, telescope or pair of binoculars the image you're seeing seems to jump about and it's hard to keep whatever you're looking at still? Well that's what's known as camera shake and it's caused by the tiny movements all humans make being magnified through the lens. The more powerful the lens the more shake you get.

If your shutter speed isn't fast enough to freeze this movement it'll blur just like a fast moving car, cyclist, runner, bird in flight..... etc. So you have to be sure your shutter speed is fast enough to freeze this movement and there's a simple little formula to help you in this video.

Shoot Your Own Sunset Wall Art - Part 1

Think how much more satisfying it is to have an amazing image on your wall that you can say "I took that photo" to your friends when they comment on it, than it is to simply go to Ikea and buy one.

It doesn't really matter what kind of image it is. Could be landscape, close up, a portrait, but the enjoyment of taking it and being able to admire it yourself is next to nothing. So we thought we'd go out and show you how to go about photographing a sunset / landscape.

Sunset photography almost always looks great and is relatively simple - but you have to research your location, the weather, time of year etc as well as go click with the camera. How to shoot your own wall art part 1 is all about these initial stages of the photography. In wall art part two we'll do the actual shoot.

Oil On Water - photo idea!

Some time back one of our regulars, a lovely guy called Nick Jeffrey, posted this picture of oil droplets floating on water to our Facebook page, and said he'd read about it in a magazine. As we love low tech photo ideas we asked Nick if he'd be up for showing us how he did the shot.

Oil droplets floating on water doesn't sound very exciting but it makes a great abstract photo and is easy to achieve with just a few household items. Drink cans, coloured paper, desk lamp - stuff like that. Oh and a camera of course!

Backlighting translucent things like oil, water, ice etc makes them come to life because the light coming from behind accentuates the edges. We've got a neat exercise to help you with what light works with what if you're interested please come see us at http://www.photographycourses.biz/goo...

Nick is a raving photographer and we'd like to say thanks for sharing mate. It's one thing to read about a photography technique - and quite another to see it demonstrated.
