With the recruiting clock starting as early as middle school, why
do parents think they have plenty of time if their eleventh grade son
or daughter has zero activity going on? What do they have to gain by
waiting for the high school coach who waits until the student's senior
season is over before getting started? Why do parents think they can
wait until next season to start taking video? If the student athlete is
not noticed after attending 2 or 3 summer showcases, why do parents
think that attending 5 or 6 more showcases will magically get them
noticed?
Any family who takes this path will have limited opportunities, limited offers, pay too much for college and, in the worst case scenario, not play ball in college and be forced to pay full boat list price for college. Time could be the difference between paying $50,000 per year for a $50,000 per year education; $20,000 per year for a $50,000 per year education or being forced to walk away from a $50,000 per education due to cost.
In each NCAA sport there are a limited number of roster spots available and a finite amount of financial aid available to student athletes. When they are gone; they are gone. College coaches can't create more roster spots than the NCAA allows. College financial aid officers can't mystically create more money out of thin air.
Roster spots and financial aid are available and awarded to athletes and their families who take the initiative, understand what college coaches want and act early. Is it better to be one of the first 2 or 3 athletes in line trying to get one of 10 possible roster spots or wait and be one of 50 or 100 athletes trying to get the last available roster spot. Also, the last spot is usually associated with no money because there is never enough money to go around.
Any family that chooses to wait, should also factor in the possibility of the student athlete living at home and commuting to college. They should also factor in the possibility of a community college option. There will be a need to borrow several thousand dollars of additional student loans to cover the cost of education and additional monies required to cover the cost of a car and insurance for the commute.
As one can see the cost of waiting snowballs quickly and is not cost-effective.
