One of the very best photographic light sources is completely free and
can be found in almost any home - window light. And the best soft
directional light comes from a window facing away from the sun.
This might sound nuts but when you have sunshine streaming into the room it'll create harsh black shadows and the 'soft' element will be lost. If it's an overcast day then facing away from the sun isn't so much of an issue - but watch out for breaks in the clouds.
You can use window light for pretty much any indoor photos from portraiture to still life and all sorts of places between. Window lighting works great with a reflector by the way and you can experiment with that for yourself. If you don't have one try using a piece of white card to bounce a bit of light back into the image. In this video we'll show you what to look for and how to use one of the best lighting kits available - windows!
