Our dishwasher has been doing a poor job of cleaning the dishes lately.
And I've always wanted to see what it looks like inside a dishwasher
during the cycle. So I cut a piece of acrylic, screwed on a few 1x2's,
tricked the dishwasher into thinking the door was closed, and let 'er
rip.
Note that overriding the "door closed" sensor isn't exactly safe--I found out the hard way a while back that the position switches carry 120VAC.
It became immediately apparent why the dishes weren't being cleaned--the spray arms weren't spinning. So I did a little cleaning here, a little modification there, and now the dishwasher works better. A follow-up video showing the fix is in the works...
